An indication of how serious Microsoft is about getting Viridian up to speed as quickly as possible? Microsoft embedded OS’s - where to next? Do we really want Vista embedded?

So it was quite some time ago that I was messing around with SmartPhones, and then I finally moved on to the Orange C600 running WM5 and I was quite satisfied with that for some time.

Then I moved back to Australia and found that there was something quite different about trying to get GPRS working reliably down here with Optus on a PrePay plan. So eventually I managed to contact someone in Melbourne who was prepared to help me get access to a copy of the Australian ROM for the i-Mate SP5, and after applying that all seemed pretty good with the GPRS working straight out of the box via a cab file that was supplied.

But after a while the SmartPhone started locking or freezing after about a day to a day and a half and would require a reboot to get going again - So I started looking at a replacement, and while I was in Singapore recently I caught up with an old work mate from Citrix and he had one of the new HTC Touch mobiles that looked really nice and I was then starting to seriously think about seeing if I could get one here in Sydney?

Then my thoughts turned to whether or not it might be possible to upgrade the ROM image on my current C600 (Tornado) to WM6 and it didn’t take too much digging around before I discovered this information.

in the past I have found the MoDaCo site to contain quite good info, but Paul as an MVP clearly needs to keep things above board with Microsoft, so you will probably not find much in the way of links there and more over at xda-developers.

!!!!WARNING!!!!
Do not attempt any of this unless you either A: know what you are doing, OR B: are prepared to turn your handset in to a very expensive paperweight?

I will not be answering questions if you get into trouble, this post is simply meant to highlight what is possible and provide a convenient place to group the information to get you started.

NOTE:
The first image that I used was missing the t9, so try the first link under extras to get that back in and then you should be good to go?

BTW performance on this now is noticeably quicker than with the old iMate SP5 ROM

The Tornado will also probably be sold as SP5, SPV C600, etc

The image I used was "UPDATED!!! [[V6]] Windows Mobile 6 for Tornado Perfect English Edition Released!"

I don’t know what the legal laws are in Australia, but this is blatant piracy. Can’t afford a Windows 2003 Datacenter Edition Server? Simply find a copy online! It’s only a little below board with Microsoft.

Piracy is theft. You don’t have any right to own that product.

If you can’t afford a new phone, don’t steal Microsoft’s products. Find a way to legally meet your needs. While it won’t meet your needs today, if your patient, you will be able to go to handhelds.org and install linux on your phone. You have every right to keep that product.

While piracy takes money away from Microsoft, it also encourages other users to keep using microsoft, and discourages them from using their money wisely by seeking out less costly alternatives.

    Hi Matt,

Look, I hear what you are saying, but that’s a bit of a stretch isn’t it? comparing a SmartPhone to DataCenter? BTW it’s not like most people are carrying around a Server in their pocket?

My point is that after moving from the UK to Australia should that mean that I have to give up a perfectly good handset just because the local Telco’s don’t neccessarily support it? Should I be buying a new handset every year and junking the old one in to a landfill somewhere?

As much as Handsets are selling in droves there is such a wide variety that the customers are sold super short on anything like decent support from the Telco’s who want to lock them in. So it should come as no surprise that people are manaing their own support - and in the process making these devices do things they were never intended.

OK, so from your viewpoint this is Piracy? Well I’m happy to stump up and PAY for Windows Mobile 6 - IF I CAN BUY IT!! - but you can’t, and nor would Microsoft want to sell it either - could you imagine the Support Calls? No, it’ll stay nicely locked up and controlled by the Telcos, don’t you think?

Blatant Piracy ?? I do understand where you are coming from, but could you tone it down a little?

    Cheers,
    Dave

    The market for software stinks.

It will not get better until people are willing to do something about it.

It is much easier for a person to just swipe a copy of something that they want, which is a quick fix, than to do the harder work, which would benefit them more in the long run.

This advice encourages someone not to really DO anything worthwhile about the problem.

As far as toning it down, piracy is piracy. Since your blog publicly influences peoples ideas, it hurts your credibility if you recommend piracy.

I love neoware neolinux and SBC & VDI. I am just trying to do my part to make the software market better (ie by joining together with others to encourage working together to share the burden of fixing the software market).

I am about controlling our own destiny, (SBC & VDI do allow you control - picture a home setup with 5 machines), and I think linux and SBC/VDI help us get there.

    Matt
