I got my XPe runtimeage image from my provider with both FWBF and
Registry Filter components.

But I encountered when trying to put my own monitored keys in the
runtimage image.

Because my application sets the default settings in HKLM during
installation and allows users to change it and save in HKCU. So I need
to monitor the entries in both HKLM and HKCU.

So I added the followings in my registry (when FBWF is off):

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\regfilter\Parameters
\MonitoredKeys\2
?ClassKey = HKLM
?FileNameForSaving = MySetting1.rgf
?RelativeKeyName = SOFTWARE\MyApplication

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\regfilter\Parameters
\MonitoredKeys\3
?ClassKey = HKCU
?FileNameForSaving = MySetting1.rgf
?RelativeKeyName = SOFTWARE\MyApplication

After I enable FBWF and restarted my machine. But only the settings
for HKLM worked and those for HKCU didn't.

My problem looks similiar to http://forums.microsoft.com/EmbeddedWindows/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=1089...

Can you give me some opinions?

Thanx a lot.

Good article!

The reason why fbwf is not too appealing on the full OS like XP Pro is because there are so many services running in the background that just the act of booting to the desktop consumes precious space in the ram overlay and will cause the overlay to be full sooner and require a reboot in a shorter period of time to reclaim the space. "Short" is relative, the 'chattier' the services and applications running on the os, the sooner it'll run out of ram space. On an embedded os the developer of the device has a lot of control over reducing those services and ensure the device has a good experience while leveraging a write filter.

A benefit of ewf over this scenario is that ewf supports disk overlays as well as ram overlay. A disk overlay could be configured on the order of hundreds of gigs if you wanted, massively extending that uptime of the device if you were using a full os.

Keeping writing on XPe topics, there's lot of room on the net and in blogs for this topic :-)
